I personally would rather get 1000 dollars from my dead grandfather than a camera I know for a fact I'll never use. I see it as coming down to whether or not he is ever going to actually use it.

I believe most "non-recent" photoshops might have a darkroom / chamber and the knowledge you would need to get the shots when you have the raw-film..

Also, maybe, if you have a college or some sort of artschool nearby, they might have a darkroom as well and might even do it for free?

I was registered there some years ago and they seem to know nearly everything about photography and cameras..

 

I would, sadly, believe that the camera is not $1000 worth now as it comes from the era where the massproduction of cameras started.. Not at all in the same scale as we see today, but around that time it became payable to everyone (well, 'cept the smug of the society )..

 

So I would say stick with it as a great memory of your granddad..
