The concrete one was supposedly abandoned, but I don't know if there's any truth to that. Regardless, ants have no feelings, no emotions and feel no pain. They are driven on instinct. If they felt pain or had emotions, then the colonies would collapse and the queens would die. It's this alone that makes them fight to the death and defend the colony from intruders.

 

Granted, I still feel bad when I step on a bug on accident and always try to move them out of my way if I can (there are exceptions: spiders, roaches, mosquitos, etc).

I've seen a thing on where they think that there is a super colony where it's all connected from Florida to like Kentucky, as far as Arkansas.
