To all those people asking , you know how it is spent...servers, vent, forums, software/mods (eg. zombiemod, gameME). Suri even listed it in his post. I'd reckon the dedi's probably cost between $200 and $400 a month depending on what the deal is with wolfservers (this just of looking at their advertised prices, so actual price may be different). There are also one-off payments as well. And also, not all the funds always come straight from the donations, some is gifted to the community by some of the higher ups.

Possibly though in HL1 G-man, on orders from his "employers" gave Eli the crystal so the combine could reach Earth? I still stand by my belief that G-man represents some form of mercenary company, sending out "agents" such as Freeman when paid to do so. In half-life 2 you hear the director guy speaking to the combine, mentioning that Freeman's contract had nearly run out, where it would then be up for highest bidder. G-man's favourite phrase "the right person at the wrong time can make all the difference" seems to back this up.

I really hope that isn't going to be the twist, that Gman and Freeman are the same person, as that would be pretty poor imo. Gman is Freeman's nemesis more than the combine, trapping him and using him as a mercenary, so it would be silly to have them actually the same person. More intresting is to work out who is hiring Freeman's services in Half-life 1 and 2, as it doesn't seem like its the rebels or combine. It seems in HL2 it could possibly be the Vortigaunts, as they release him for Ep1 and 2, removing him from Gman's control (although this implies that after HL2, whent he contract had ended, that the Vortigants were releasing Freeman to prevent him being hired by someone else, possibly the combine).
