Potentially Stupid Laptop Display Question

So I have a couple year old HP Pavilion DV-9000 notebook, the built in display went bad a while back leading to me buying a newer laptop. Anyway now I've decided to set it up as an internet browsing/office and was wondering if I remove the built in display will it automatically move to the external display?

 

I only ask because I've found that Vista will 'forget' what display I have it set to use now.

Yeah I know but I decided against it because the computer isn't really worth the cost, if I were to go to a shop to do it they want $400, and the cheapest I could find the lcd panel for was about $250, which at either price it simply made more sense to buy a new laptop.

ive never used laptops so im not sure if this will work but try setting the external monitor to your primary display.

lol, I know nothing of laptops too, thats why I'm here...

 

So I've set it to use the external display, currently that seems to be working so I guess I'll power down and remove the built in display and see if it still works, if not back to square one.

ya i was gonna say if you could open it up and make sure the display wire hasnt come loose or something

Replacing monitors can be suprisingly easy on laptops (depending on brand/+model). What was the price for one on Ebay?

Well, you may be able to plug it in, and see the second monitor. If not there may be a a key combination that makes it turn the second monitor on.
