I don't see the need for defeating the soviets as the reason for pursuing space travel. It's rather that the Earth won't last forever and it would be nice to have many humans living elsewhere to keep humanity going and who knows what kind of minerals/materials we can get from other planets. In addition the technologies developed in our pursuit of space travel may benefit us all on Earth. But as you said, since there isn't a real space-race going on anymore, I'm glad the private sector has taken up the reins.

It has its ups and downs. It's a nice little sanctuary, and if you're lucky enough (like me) to be in a company and have bosses that don't care about you surfing/browsing/chatting as long as you get your shit done then it's nice. We moved into a new office. We're all in fucking cubicles now. Luckily i once again have the windows behind me instead of more people, but I still get ninja coworkers that sneak up behind me. I even have a little computer monitor mirror to help combat the sneak attacks but sometimes I'm so into work that I don't even notice/hear them.
