Hey guys,

My comp's GPU has recently died on me after a good 3 years of service. I wanted to get a new comp anyway for a long time now, but at least now I have a good excuse, eh?

Anyway, after some BRUTAL research and comparisons, here's a rough list of specs I came up with for my new comp:

Items subject to change include RAM, PSU, GPU (thinking either that one or 8800gtx, or just an 8800gt for now and using eVga's step-up program to a 9800 when it comes out... definitely sticking with nVidia though) OS (vista 32 or 64? Home or Ultimate? Or even XP?), MAYBE CPU (new CPUs from Intel coming out this month... the question is... can I wait several weeks longer in this already prolonged process for a marginal performance boost?)

I'll take any comments and suggestions... especially what I should get for my 2nd HDD and whether or not to put them in RAID. My budget is somewhere around $2000.

For an HDD, i would suggest a raptor. They are the fastest hard-drive out there.

The downside- Only 160gb.

Don't get a GTX.

Just get 2 8800GT's in SLI mode.

For the processor...no idea. Maybe the new AMD phenom?

Ahhh my bad.

Here you go:

Should work now... I've checked the "make it public" option.

Now you gotta wait for it to be approved lol, then you need to look for it on the public wishlist. It might be easier if you just list all of the parts instead of waiting for the list to be verified by newegg.

oh wow...ok here goes.

COOLER MASTER Stacker 830 Evolution RC-830-KKN3-GP Black Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case - $179

Pretty much decided on this one.

ASUS P5E LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard - $229

Great reviews. Solid board

Graphics Card

eVga 8800GTS (G92) 512MB - $349

Should I go for this one or the much cheaper 8800gt and use evga's step-up program to a 9800GX2 when it comes out? I'll take other suggestions but I'm sticking with nvidia on this one.

Power Supply

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad (Black) EPS12V 750W Power Supply - $169

So many choices... just picked a solid-looking, good-reviewed PSU.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz - $274

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz - $190

A Quad core or a high-end dual core? A Quad is more "future-proof" than a dual, however, the E6750 clocks better than the Q6600 and is almost $100 cheaper. Comments on this?

2x OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) - $162

Loads of choices out there... this ram has good timings and performance + overclocking capabilities. Thoughts on this?

Hard Drive

Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM - $169

OK. I'm pretty much certain I'm getting one of these paired with another drive for storage. Suggestions for the 2nd drive? Should I go RAID0?

DVD Burner

LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write Black SATA - $33

Just picked the best reviewed one...I'd love to hear suggestions on this one.

Sound Card

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty - $136

Might go for a cheaper one... dunno. Thoughts?

Operating System

Microsoft Windows Vista 32-Bit Home Premium - $110

lol, the 14 vista ultimates that I "won" on live club never came.

Should I go for this or an Ultimate? Or a 64 bit? Or XP??? So many choices...argh

That about does it. So far the total comes to about $1815. Again, my budget is about $2,000 max.

Thanks in advance guys.

That memory sucks. If you want DDR2 get a 1.8v PC6400, then you can overclock it to 2.2v if you want.

I've had Lite-on drives burn out, albeit they were old but they still burned out go with a samsung they're the same price.

The motherboard you picked comes with 8 channel audio. Make sure you don't like it before waste money on a sound card.

If you want to go RAID, which is cool, you need 2 identical drives. You can have 2 raptors in raid-0 and a 500gb for storage.
