The smartest thing ever, i would go into a grocery store, with a ammo department, put a ladder to the rafters, build a little hut. Pull the ladder up to me. and camp there with all of the ammo...

Gather up people, head out for a military base, train'em and then start a mercenary group and hire out to the highest bidder. Gather up enough money, supplies and man-power and then start conquering the destroyed world little by little.
