Windows server 8 will feature 64 bit exclusively.

Finally o_o Software is normally coded in 32 bit and can only use up to 2GB of ram. Games will start to have better performance because they can use more ram, (arma 2 for example)

Also, the OS can use more ram in a 64 bit OS than a 32 bit.

Considering I already have windows 7, and thus, have 64bit software, this isn't big news. But it feels good that people will be able to experience a higher level of gameplay. I breaks my heart to see someone stuttering in-game.

I have windows xp 64bit suck on that.

Sorry to say, but Windows XP 64bit was a failure. Very few programs were actually made for 64bit OS at that time. And to add to that, XP 64bit had a lot of other problems like crashing, bad support, etc. Suck on that.

you do know that the server environment has already transitioned to 64bit due to higher workloads and memory/hard drive requirements, I don't expect the consumer market to phase out 32bit anytime soon due to low-cost/low-power pc's

I agree with Dark Torcher on this. 32bit will be around for a few more years at least, seeing as its the norm for all of the low end machines on the market today. By low end machines I'm referring to the whole netbook thing along with those cheapo emachines (and the like) people buy at walmart.

All consumer units have been 64bit since the Pentium 4. The only reason all software hasnt moved to 64bit is because nobody has forced them to. Microsoft drops 32bit support a lot of people will scream and whine and it will make really no difference.

It's a marketting distinction preserved solely by the ridiculously outdated and undersupported software the bottom of the market uses and the massive silent clout that gamers have on the rest of the market. They make a 64bit OS that's good for gaming and I guarantee you they can drop 32bit support and everyone will follow it.

People listen to the nerds nowadays.

The next windows is probably 3-5 years off. By that time net books will be 64bit, ram will be at a 8-11GB average. Processors will all support 64 bit, like they have since P4(excluding netbooks). It will be impossible for microsoft to actually think that people could use a 32 bit os.

In 2007 ram average was at 512mb now it is 2GB, a 4 times multiplication in 3 years. So about, not 100% accurate, but it is still a rough estimate.

512mb x 4 = 2GB

2GB x 4 = 8GB
