jamison.webster Posted August 17, 2010 Content Count: 18 Joined: 08/14/10 Status: Offline Share Posted August 17, 2010 The Xbox 360 can output video in 1920x1080, however 95% of games (MW2, any valve game, fallout 3, ect) output to a true resolution of 1280x720. this is due to the hardware restrictions of the xbox's relatively weak GPU. Microsoft knows about this and they compensate for this bottleneck using a process called scaling. scaling takes the 720p image rendered by the GPU and expands the image to fit a 1080p resolution. This allows the GPU to render 720p but have it "look" like 1080p. The draw-back to this method is that the image sent to the display is of lower quality and rather blocky, but from 15 feet away on your couch you don't notice this as much and the image looks relatively clear. Microsoft uses this trickery to claim full HD video games, yet still saves money by reducing the hardware requirements of the console. But by using a screen with a native 1280x720 resolution, you get the best image quality because the image isn't being scaled up or scaled down. Link to comment
