The burger is simply a patty and two buns. When its being made the 3 parts: top, bottom, and patty are separate, with the top being flipped over. You can put one more many things ON any of these components of the burger. In the burger makes far more sense, but unfortunately you are just wrong. Seriously pay attention next time you order a burger at a restaurant, everyone says ON. Link to comment

Typically this is when the toppings are put on, directly on top of the patty and bread and whatever else is below it. It also just had to do with dialect because English doesn't like to make sense.
