Clean Install for XP*

Any tips on how to keep my computer running smoothly after re-install.

I want to be able to run my computer at top speeds.

 

Any ideas.

don't use xp.

 

you probably assume, especially from the source, that i'm just being sarcastic. But seriously. i havent had the bit-rot problems of xp since i left it back in ~05.

I'll just reinstall it to have a nice clear start

Don't install shit just to uninstall it two hours later.

Don't put too much crap on startup either.

Use a router with a decent firewall, any linksys (coughciscocough) will probably work pretty well right out of the box.

 

Use Spybot Search and Destroy's Immunize feature regularly

 

Use Adblock Plus

 

Don't click links you don't recognize, don't trust any popup or window (even if its a windows error box), and NEVER CLICK "OK". Always click the X in the top right. The only time you ever click ok is when they pull the dick move of saying "Click OK to navigate away from this page or click cancel to stay!!11!"

Also never run any executable file you haven't virus scanned. That includes music, videos, any sort of flash or java file, anything ending in .exe, and anything other than a picture really.
