While I think it's plausible for people to be driven to improvement by envy, I think it's more healthy to improve yourself through non-envious comparisons. Jealousy generally involves a feeling of discontent with your current situation, which I don't find to be exceedingly more motivating than aspiring to be something while remaining content with your situation.
