The problem with our current colors is that they are too contrasting and jarring. We need to cum up with a softer color scheme that isn't so painful to view against a dark background. Going with primary colors against a dark background is just begging for a brain aneurysm. It's been several years since I looked at color theory, but there are sites out there that will give you a nice palette if you give them a starting color. I'd advise going with something they generate rather than thinking of one alone as there are complementary colors, but they are difficult to imagine without any reference or knowledge behind the theory.
