Took me a few days, I'm awake.
I think this thread has a lot of potential to get good changes, so I'm gonna try my best to explain some things I said better aswell as share opinions on the things I did not.
I completely agree with this and it was exactly what I was trying to get at when I said this.
To elaborate a bit.
Our MG server has way too many maps on it that function decently so end up staying on the server. For other servers like TTT, JB, ZE we tend to pick at little things about maps hyper-objectively and remove what is unnecessary or simply bad for population. Awhile back on JB we pretty much stealthily cut out a bunch of maps, noone cared, noone noticed, but it made the server do visibly better not hitting those "bumps". In this situation I think maybe we make some kind of event where instead of testing a lot of maps, we go through the old ones objectively- where people like @whimsy would be able to make a proper case for why he doesn't want a map. Sometimes playing the map itself and not enjoying isn't going to be reason enough to remove it, sometimes maps just arent popular and don't resonate- you have to pick a group of select good ones.
I'll elaborate on this part aswell.
The current CS:GO community has a pretty big lacking of MG servers with a solid community as I discussed with @Wawa a few weeks back. I hope we pursue many of these changes because trying to carve out our own too unique path has been tried and failed for way too long. Sacrificing a few things for the greater good, even if just experimentally is worth the effort of gaining another major server (especially if its something as basic as maps). There are currently no "major" MG servers within the United States so to say, and even looking at the MG servers that do well out of the States- they don't do that well either. Though they don't do that well, there is enough of a playerbase out there to build a foundation and we certainly have enough people at SG to give it that initial boost.
Maps are the core of a server, especially MG- if we fuck up maps its gonna very hard to recover from there no matter how much cool shit we have. One of those "cool things" (!ws !knife plugin) doesn't really cost much of anything to have, but we have had a stance where we want to follow the server guidelines so we pay for that. It's pretty much as simple as buying new server tokens (which are pretty fuckin cheap for 1 server), and running a plugin on the server that automatically restarts it once every 3 days every time it is banned. I've personally never suggested this, but its definitely on of the things that pulls kids into servers.
People tend to enjoy familiarity, they come on a server with an idea of what they want to play, so when we have 65% of the time our maps in the "other category", I view that as a bad thing. If you don't believe me I'm willing to bet you almost any amount of money that popular servers tend to lean towards lower percentages within the "other category". Other than the reason I've already stated this is also due to repeating regulars picking the same maps, on SG this is however difficult to do as explained in my previous post. To pick up on that last thought I think us having so many different options and categories is a bad thing. Not to get nerdy but people generally hate having many options, which it's choice overload- not due to familiarity but more to do with regret.
The other suggestions about a stats plugin, auto-plant, adding skins to store aswell as skinchooser, and increasing slots are in my opinion pretty low-risk high-reward changes that should absolutely be done. Stats plugin is pretty obvious, it's one of the things that makes our other servers so loved and popular. Increasing Surf's slots to 40 as dumb as I thought it might be actually ended up working partially, for MG it makes sense especially when the server hits peak. We need to get the highest amount of people stuffed in there as possible to bring the shitty average up. @LampShade, your response to the auto-plant suggestion does not make full sense- you need to reread that as it could shorten rounds or at the very least consider adding a fastplant plugin. Just because we have admins doesn't mean we shouldn't add things to give more automation or lighten the load for them, especially with the lack of staffing we currently have.
